I have no idea what any of those things are, and googling just shows me old Native American stuff... Pandora, the moon where the giant waste of a film Avatar was committed takes place, orbits the gas giant Polyphemus. Avatar is also a lame ripoff straightforward retelling of that one American myth about the Noble Natives helpless against the Evil Murdering Colonists and the Mighty White Hero who will come and lead them to Freedom and Independence because apparently those poor primitive bastards couldn't win a war by themselves if you gave them a Death Star I mean come on waiting for the riflemen line to be in nice flat plain before charging them frontally instead of flanking them in limited-vision hills how did they not Darwin themselves to extinction already oh wait literal Deus Ex Machina of course in a SF setting. So putting one Amerindian Revival culture on a moon whose name is the same of the planet around which the moon of an Amerindian-inspired culture may or may not be a shoot-out. You may or may not have perceived my rather low opinion of said film.
This has something to do with the insistence of everyone to try and be stupider than the others, the condescending insults to, well, everything and everyone I can think of, the environmental message with a subtlety of a war in the Middle East and with of course no realistic solution proposed, the waste of a fantastic starship design in that mess or the fact that the entire ecosystem has obviously be engineered in prevision of human arrival by god-like aliens (whose planet entity may be either a representative or a servant) to which humankind did its best to show the most dangerous and hostile aspect possible with a combination of irrationality, untrustworthiness and rabid expansionism meaning that by far the most logical course of action for them would be to make sure to wipe humankind out before they start really go interstellar for good and can still be squashed like a bug at Hiroshima, also thereby wasting a sequel where they actually send a Gaia Seed on Earth to assimilate its ecosystem and turn it against humans while going Body Snatchers against them to which the Pandora hivemind, not wanting its "children" to be culled as well, decides to ally with humans and aid them with an interstellar counter-invasion.
But the true reason is that the same year, another film called Battle for Terra, with a rounding error of its budget, made an actually great piece from the same premise. (It also contains one of the most subtle symbols I've ever seen in a film, to the point that I still wonder if this speck of brilliance was even conscious from the designers)
And about no-one have heard about it. |

I supported the human faction throughout the entire movie and felt any theme the movie was trying to deliver was far too heavy handed to be anything other than very annoying and off putting. I agree with most criticism of the movie (I can't say I "hated" it, my standards are pretty low for sci-fi movies, but I did despise the script indeed), still, I am surprised that you managed to root for the greedy-stupid humans rather than the peaceful in-perfect-harmony-with-the-world natives. |
