The sandbox settings do feel a little limited - they are great, but it does feel like you're very restricted in how much control you have over setting up a scenario.
However, they do provide the opportunity for some offline multiplayer.
If there was a simple way to export craft files, then this could make for design vs design matchups pretty easily, especially if you had more control over the Sandbox settings (e.g., starting from engagement range, using fixed or programmable orders).

I just figured part of this out: if you look in Resources/Data/designs.txt, you can check out the format that modules and ships are stored in, which is pretty simple and readable imo. Ctrl+F "corvette" or something to see what I mean.

These are default designs, right? But where are custom designs stored?

The game pines for ship, module, and scenario sharing via Workshop. I mentioned Workshop to Qswitched at some point and I think he acknowledged it would be a good idea, so... eventually?

I feel really stupid. I've looked in AppData and just missed it. Just in case someone needs it, on Windows 7 and up that would be [user folder]/AppData/Roaming/CDE/UserDesigns.txt
There is also a folder for mods in there.

Workshop support was mostly done by ship time, however some outstanding issues prevented me from finishing. So yes, in a future update workshop support will exist.
