Theoretical (i.e. not CDE-capable) suggestion: could firing a mirror drone to permit targeting in surprise directions be a practical solution to this? blkcandy : yea, you can. That shape isn't the best, but there are reasonable ones.

I dearly wish we could set thrusters to roll/yaw mode only. Bonus points if we could armored caps for yaw thrusters. Damn engine insists on using manouvring thrusters to accelerate. It played merry hell with my limited dV gun launched KKV. 3 kg shell fired @ 3.6 km/s with octanitrocubane. Gun length is reasonable too . It does suck to micromanage. And it plays all hell with the AI.

That shape isn't the best, but there are reasonable ones. Atomic Rockets talked about mirrior drones in their space forts section, regarding high yield lasers on space forts and how vunrable they would be if lased, however if the enemy has LOS on your mirrors they can shoot too
