So lens caps for lasers are a thing now, governed, I believe, by the armor thickness you put on the turret. When I have my laser off I see the lens cap visually there on the model, but I'm not sure they actually do anything. Even if i put a meter of armor on the turret it seems to get popped off instantly by any laser at any range.
I tried cladding my turret in literally tens of thousands of tons of osmium and my test laser pops it off instantly. It then actually takes several seconds to destroy the aperture - so in fact this meter of osmium is somehow much flimsier than the delicate silver mirror behind it. Maybe it doesn't actually use the turret armor for the lens cap? Either way, caps seem useless as of now.

As far as I can tell, the lens caps close when the laser/turret is deactivated. And 10cm of Amorphous Carbon offers pretty decent laser protection.

Yes, I know. They are closed, I see them there on the model, they just don't seem to provide any protection.

I'm pretty sure they work to protect the laser against counterlaser fire. You need to deactivate the turret in order for this to happen, though.

They work fine for me. I tested it earlier today with a custom build I made today against the beam craft with its 13 MW lasers. Assuming you aren't shooting, they can't melt the mirror. However if you do start firing, all bets are off.

That's weird. For me the closed cap is destroyed much faster (instantly, near as I can tell) than the mirror itself, no matter what I armor it with it. Even the game's default lasers will do it. Am I missing something?

Am I missing something? The turret I made today was made of tungsten carbide, so it had an exceptional melting temperature and kinetic blockage ability. The moment they came into range of my lasers for counter lasing, I managed to pop 6 of their lasers before they popped my 2.

normal tungsten is better then tungsten carbide

normal tungsten is better then tungsten carbide Tests indicate WC resists light kinetics better than pure W. Vs heavy kinetics testing is inconclusive. Eithee way, both are extremely mass-suboptimal.
